Temperaturänderungen wirken sich jedoch auf die Gesamtbevölkerung aus, und hohe Temperaturen verursachen Ionisationsinterferenzen, die sich beide auf die spektrale Intensität auswirken.
Darüber hinaus zeigt die gesamte Atomspektroskopie bei hohen Temperaturen einen ausgeprägteren Dopplereffekt mit spektraler Linienverbreiterung und Reduzierung der Peakhöhe.

Die für die Atomisierung erforderliche Flammentemperatur beeinflusst die Effizienz der atomspektroskopischen Methoden, indem sie die Atomisierungseffizienz und die relative Besetzung der angeregten und Grundzustände erhöht.

Im thermischen Gleichgewicht können die relativen Besetzungen der angeregten Atome und der Atome im  Grundzustand mithilfe der Maxwell-Boltzmann-Verteilung geschätzt werden. Beispielsweise kann eine Temperaturerhöhung von 2500 K auf 2600 K die Besetzung der Natriumatome im angeregten Zustand um 45 % erhöhen, während die Abnahme der Grundzustandsbesetzung vernachlässigbar ist. Da die Atomemissionsspektroskopie (AES) auf der Photonenemission dieser angeregten Zustände beruht, ist sie stark temperaturabhängig. Im Gegensatz dazu hängen die Atomabsorptionsspektroskopie (AAS) und die Atomfluoreszenzspektroskopie (AFS) hauptsächlich von der Grundzustandsbesetzung ab und weisen eine weniger signifikante Temperaturabhängigkeit auf. Bei leicht ionisierbaren Elementen führt eine Erhöhung der Flammentemperatur jedoch zu einem Verlust von Atomen durch Ionisierung, was sich nachteilig auf die Absorption und die spektrale Fluoreszenzintensität auswirkt.

Darüber hinaus erhöht eine höhere Temperatur bei der Atomspektroskopie insgesamt die Geschwindigkeit der Atome, wodurch der Dopplereffekt stärker ausgeprägt wird. Dies führt zu einer Verbreiterung der Atomspektrallinien und einer Verringerung der Peakhöhe.

Heat changes atomic spectra by affecting atomization, excitation, ionization, and line shape. In atomic spectroscopy, atomization means converting a sample into gas-phase atoms and ions. The flame temperature needed for this step changes how efficiently the method works and shifts the balance between excited and ground-state atoms.

At thermal equilibrium, the relative numbers of excited and ground-state atoms can be estimated with the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution. A small temperature rise can make a big difference. For example, increasing the temperature from 2500 K to 2600 K can raise the number of excited-state sodium atoms by 45%, while the decrease in ground-state atoms is negligible.

This temperature effect matters most for atomic emission spectroscopy, or AES, because it depends on photons emitted from excited atoms. Atomic absorption spectroscopy, or AAS, and atomic fluorescence spectroscopy, or AFS, mainly depend on ground-state atoms, so their temperature dependence is less significant. However, for easily ionizable elements, higher flame temperature can remove atoms by ionization and reduce absorption and fluorescence signal intensity.

Higher temperature also makes atoms move faster. This increases the Doppler effect, which broadens atomic spectral lines and lowers peak height. As a result, temperature can shape both the strength and the width of atomic signals.
