Innerhalb der Elastizitätsgrenze variiert die maximale Spannung in einer massiven Kreiswelle linear mit dem radialen Abstand von ihrer Achse.
Mit zunehmendem Drehmoment erreicht die maximale Spannung zu Beginn der Streckgrenze einen Sättigungswert. Setzt man diesen Sättigungswert ein, kann das entsprechende maximale elastische Drehmoment berechnet werden, bei dem die Verformung vollelastisch bleibt.
Durch die Ersetzung von J/c wird das Drehmoment in Form des radialen Abstands und der maximalen Spannung ausgedrückt.
Wenn das Drehmoment weiter ansteigt, entwickelt sich in der Welle ein plastischer Bereich um einen elastischen Kern mit dem Radius ρY.
Im plastischen Bereich ist die Spannung gleichmäßig gleich τY, während sie im elastischen Kern linear mit ρ variiert.
Wenn das Drehmoment weiter erhöht wird, dehnt sich der plastische Bereich aus, bis die Verformung vollständig plastisch ist.
Das Gesamtdrehmoment in der massiven Kreiswelle kann als Überlagerung von Drehmomenten im elastischen und plastischen Bereich ausgedrückt werden.
Vereinfacht man die Gleichung weiter und setzt ρY an die Stelle, wenn sie sich Null nähert, so kann der Grenzwert des plastischen Drehmoments bestimmt werden, der einer vollständig plastischen Verformung entspricht.

Die Untersuchung massiver Rundwellen unter Spannung zeigt, dass innerhalb der Elastizitätsgrenze die Spannung direkt mit der Entfernung vom Wellenmittelpunkt ansteigt. Diese Beziehung bleibt bestehen, bis die Welle einen kritischen Spannungspunkt erreicht, an dem sie nachgibt und den Übergang von der elastischen zur plastischen Verformung markiert. An diesem entscheidenden Punkt wird das maximale Drehmoment ermittelt, das die Welle ohne bleibende Verformung aushalten kann, was die Grenze ihres elastischen Verhaltens darstellt.

Mit zunehmendem Drehmoment an der Welle entwickelt sich der plastische Bereich, der den inneren elastischen Kern umgibt und durch ein konstantes Spannungsniveau im plastischen Bereich und eine lineare Spannungsverteilung innerhalb des elastischen Kerns gekennzeichnet ist. Bei kontinuierlichem Drehmomentanstieg dehnt sich die plastische Zone aus und verringert den elastischen Kern, bis die Verformung entlang der Welle vollständig plastisch wird.

Das auf die Welle ausgeübte Gesamtdrehmoment ist eine Summe der Drehmomente, die mit den elastischen und plastischen Verformungsbereichen verbunden sind. Durch weitere Analyse und Vereinfachung, die sich auf die Erweiterung des plastischen Bereichs konzentriert, kann das endgültige plastische Drehmoment berechnet werden. Das ultimative plastische Drehmoment ist das maximale Drehmoment, das die Welle bewältigen kann, bevor sie einer vollständigen plastischen Verformung unterliegt und ihre ursprüngliche Form vollständig verliert.

Circular shafts under torsion show a clear change from elastic behavior to plastic deformation as torque increases. In the elastic limit, stress rises in direct proportion to the distance from the shaft’s center. The outer material carries the highest stress first, and the shaft can still return to its original shape.

At a critical stress level, the shaft begins to yield. This marks the maximum torque the shaft can carry without permanent deformation. Beyond this point, a plastic region forms near the outside of the shaft, while an inner elastic core remains. In the plastic area, stress stays constant, but the elastic core still follows a linear stress pattern.

As torque keeps increasing, the plastic zone grows and the elastic core shrinks. The shaft eventually becomes fully plastic across its cross section. The total torque at any stage comes from both the elastic and plastic parts together. By examining how the plastic region expands, it is possible to calculate the ultimate plastic torque, which is the maximum torque the shaft can withstand before it loses its original form completely.
