In diesem Modus arbeitet der Transistor als Verstärker, wobei ein kleiner Basisstrom einen größeren Kollektorstrom steuert.
Im Sättigungsmodus sind beide Sperrgänge in Vorwärtsrichtung vorgespannt. Dieser Modus entspricht einer kleinen Vorspannung und einem großen Ausgangsstrom und wirkt effektiv wie ein geschlossener Schalter.
Der Abschaltmodus tritt auf, wenn beide Übergänge in Sperrrichtung vorgespannt sind, was dazu führt, dass kein Strom zwischen den Anschlüssen fließt. Der Transistor fungiert als offener Schalter.
Im invertierten Modus ist der Emitter-Basis-Übergang in Sperrrichtung vorgespannt, während der Kollektor-Basis-Übergang in Vorwärtsrichtung vorgespannt ist. Er wird oft als invertierter aktiver Modus bezeichnet, bei dem der Kollektor zum Emitter wird und umgekehrt.
Dieser Modus weist eine geringere Stromverstärkung auf, da die "Emittereffizienz" durch eine geringere Kollektordotierung im Vergleich zur Basendotierung verursacht wird.

Anreicherungsmodus-MOSFETs sind zentrale Komponenten in der Elektronik, die sich durch ihre Fähigkeit auszeichnen, als hocheffiziente Schalter zu fungieren. Sie sind Teil der größeren Familie der Metalloxid-Halbleiter-Feldeffekttransistoren (MOSFETs). Sie sind in zwei Typen erhältlich: p-Kanal und n-Kanal, jeweils auf bestimmte Polaritätsoperationen zugeschnitten.

In ihrer Grundform sind Anreicherungsmodus-MOSFETs normalerweise nichtleitend, wenn die Gate-Source-Spannung (Vgs) Null ist. Dieser standardmäßige „Aus“-Zustand bedeutet, dass kein Strom zwischen den Drain- und Source-Anschlüssen fließt, sofern keine positive Vgs angelegt wird. Wenn diese Spannung angelegt wird, erzeugt sie ein elektrisches Feld, das Elektronen (für n-Kanal) oder Löcher (für p-Kanal) in Richtung der Oxidschicht zieht und effektiv eine sogenannte Inversionsschicht erzeugt. Diese Schicht bildet einen leitenden Kanal zwischen Source und Drain, wodurch Strom fließen kann.

Das einzigartige Merkmal von Anreicherungs-MOSFETs ist ihre Fähigkeit, die Stärke des Drainstroms (id) durch Anpassen von Vgs zu steuern. Eine Erhöhung von Vgs verbessert die Leitfähigkeit des Kanals und ermöglicht dadurch einen höheren Stromdurchfluss. Diese Beziehung zwischen Vgs und id macht diese Geräte hervorragend für Präzisionssteuerungsanwendungen geeignet, wie z. B. das Anpassen der Helligkeit von LED-Leuchten über einen Dimmerschalter. Dabei variiert das Drehen des Dimmerknopfs Vgs; bei Nullspannung sind die LEDs aus und eine Erhöhung der Spannung hellt die LEDs zunehmend auf.

Darüber hinaus sind Anreicherungs-MOSFETs aufgrund ihres hohen Eingangs- und niedrigen Einschaltwiderstands ideal für Leistungsschaltkreise und die Erstellung von Logikgattern vom Typ CMOS in integrierten Schaltkreisen. Diese Eigenschaften ermöglichen effizientes, schnelles Schalten mit minimalem Leistungsverlust, was Anreicherungs-MOSFETs im modernen Elektronikdesign unverzichtbar macht.

A bipolar junction transistor (BJT) works in four modes that depend on how its two junctions are biased. Those modes are active, saturation, cut-off, and inverted. The biasing pattern controls whether the transistor amplifies current or acts like a switch.

Active mode is the most common mode for amplification. In this mode, the emitter-base junction is forward-biased and the base-collector junction is reverse-biased. Electrons move from the emitter into the base, while the collector blocks most majority carriers. A small base current can then control a much larger collector current.

Saturation mode happens when both the emitter-base and base-collector junctions are forward-biased. It works like a closed switch. The voltage bias is minimal, and the current output is maximal. This mode is often used in switching circuits when the transistor must conduct a high current.

Cut-off mode is the opposite case, with both junctions reverse-biased. Current flow through the transistor is effectively stopped, so it behaves like an open switch. In digital circuits, this state is important for representing an off condition.

Inverted mode is less common in normal use. In this mode, the emitter-base junction is reverse-biased and the collector-base junction is forward-biased. The roles of the collector and emitter are reversed. This mode has lower current gain because the collector is a less efficient emitter than the base due to its lower doping level.
