Ziegel sind Mauersteine aus gebranntem Ton in verschiedenen Formen, Größen und Farben.
Üblicherweise wurden Ziegel in einer einfachen Holzform hergestellt, wobei eine bestimmte Anzahl von Ziegeln auf einmal hergestellt wurde.
Für die Herstellung von Ziegeln werden lokale Tone und Schiefer verwendet. Das Rohmaterial wird auf feine Konsistenz zerkleinert, gemahlen und gesiebt.
Dieses Material wird dann mit Wasser vermischt, um einen biegsamen Ton zu erzeugen, und es wird entweder durch ein weiches Schlammverfahren, ein Trockenpressverfahren oder ein steifes Schlammverfahren zu Ziegeln geformt.
Sobald der rohe Ton zu Ziegeln geformt ist, werden sie an der Luft getrocknet und in Öfen bei achtzehnhundert bis vierundzwanzighundert Grad Fahrenheit hohen Temperaturen ausgesetzt, um die Ziegel für den Baugebrauch vorzubereiten.
Die Einwirkdauer der Ziegel in den Öfen liegt zwischen 40 und 150 Stunden. Im Anschluss daran werden kontrollierte Kühlmaßnahmen umgesetzt, um thermische Rissbildung in den Ziegeln zu verhindern.
Die Temperatur im Ofen beeinflusst die Größe und Farbe der Ziegel – höhere Temperaturen führen zu mehr Schrumpfung und dunkleren Ziegeln.

Ziegel, ein grundlegendes Baumaterial, werden aus gebranntem Ton hergestellt und sind in vielen Formen, Größen und Farben erhältlich. Der Produktionsprozess beginnt mit der Gewinnung von lokalem Ton oder Schiefer, der dann zerkleinert, gemahlen und gesiebt wird, um eine feine Textur zu erhalten. Das raffinierte Material wird mit Wasser vermischt, wodurch eine geschmeidige Mischung entsteht, die mit einem von drei Verfahren zu Ziegeln geformt werden kann: Weichschlamm-, Trockenpress- oder Strangpressverfahren.

Weichschlammziegel werden in Formen mit hohem Feuchtigkeitsgehalt geformt und können je nach Formvorbereitung mit Wasser oder Sand bestrichen werden, wodurch Ziegel mit glatter oder matter Textur entstehen. Bei der Trockenpressmethode, die für stark schwindende Tone geeignet ist, wird der Ton mit minimalem Wassergehalt unter hohem Druck in Formen gepresst. Beim Strangpressverfahren, dem gebräuchlichsten und kostengünstigsten, wird eine Tonmasse mit mäßigem Wassergehalt durch eine Matrize gepresst, wobei Oberflächenstrukturen oder Farbaufträge möglich sind.

Nach der Formgebung werden die Ziegel getrocknet und bei Temperaturen zwischen 982,22°C und 1315,56°C gebrannt. Dieser 40 bis 150 Stunden dauernde Prozess verfestigt die Ziegel und beeinflusst ihre endgültige Größe und Farbe; höhere Temperaturen führen zu stärkerer Schwindung und dunkleren Farbtönen.

Trotz der Industrialisierung der Ziegelherstellung ehrt der Prozess immer noch die Tradition des Materials und passt sich den Anforderungen des modernen Bauens an, behält aber gleichzeitig die haptischen und ästhetischen Eigenschaften bei, die Ziegel zu einem beliebten Element der Architektur gemacht haben.

Bricks are made from fired clay and come in many shapes, sizes, and colors. They are a basic building material used in construction. The brickmaking process begins with local clay or shale, which is crushed, ground, and screened to make a fine material.

Next, the refined clay is mixed with water to form a workable mass. That mixture can be shaped in three main ways: soft mud, dry press, or stiff mud. Soft mud bricks are made in molds with high moisture content. They may be water-struck or sand-struck, depending on how the mold is prepared. These methods can give the finished brick a smooth or matte surface.

The dry press method is used for clays that shrink too much during drying. It uses very little water and high pressure in molds. The stiff mud process is the most common and most cost-effective method. It uses clay with moderate water content and pushes it through a die. This method can also add surface texture or color before the bricks are fired.

After forming, the bricks are dried and then fired at about 1800 to 2400 degrees Fahrenheit. Firing takes about 40 to 150 hours and makes the bricks hard and durable. The temperature also affects the final size and color. Higher firing temperatures cause more shrinkage and darker hues, which helps explain the wide range of brick looks used in modern construction.
