Bei der Herstellung von Betonmauerwerken wird steifer Beton, bestehend aus Portlandzement, Zuschlagstoffen und Wasser, in Metallformen gegossen.
Darauf folgt das Vibrieren, und kurz darauf werden die nassen Blöcke auf ein Gestell entformt.
Die nassen Blöcke werden dann entweder in einen Dampfofen zur Dampfhärtung oder in einen Autoklaven zur Hochdruckdampfhärtung transportiert.
Die Nenngröße für einen Block wird üblicherweise mit 8 Zoll in Höhe und Breite und 16 Zoll in der Länge angegeben, aber in Wirklichkeit misst jeder Block etwas kleiner.
Der in den Arbeitsfugen verwendete drei Achtel Zoll dicke Mörtel ist in den Nennmaßen des Betonsteins enthalten.
Die Betonmauersteine werden in drei Hauptkategorien hergestellt: massiv tragend, hohl tragend und nicht tragend. Erhältlich in einer Vielzahl von Formen und Größen, wie z. B. Keilrahmen, Einzeleckeinheiten und A-Block-Einheiten.

Der Herstellungsprozess von Betonsteinen beginnt mit dem Mischen von steifem Beton aus Portlandzement, Zuschlagstoffen und Wasser. Diese Mischung wird dann in Metallformen gegossen. Concrete masonry units are made by mixing stiff concrete from Portland cement, aggregates, and water. The mix is placed into metal molds and vibrated so it settles evenly and does not separate. The wet blocks are then removed from the molds and set on racks.

After molding, the blocks are moved to curing. Curing can happen in a steam kiln, where the blocks are steam cured, or in an autoclave, where high-pressure steam curing is used. This step helps the blocks gain the hardness and durability needed for construction.

A typical concrete block is nominally 8 inches high, 8 inches wide, and 16 inches long. Its actual size is slightly smaller so mortar joints can fit between blocks. Those joints are usually three-eighths of an inch thick.

Concrete masonry units are grouped as solid load-bearing, hollow load-bearing, or non-load-bearing blocks. They are also made in different shapes and sizes for different building jobs. A-blocks are used in walls that need vertical reinforcement bars, and their hollow cores are filled with grout. This shape also helps when there is little space to place blocks over bars that already protrude. Blocks are further classified by density as normal weight or lightweight.
