Building a concrete block wall starts with careful base preparation, mortar placement, and block alignment. The area where the wall will be built is cleaned first. Then mortar is spread where the first row of concrete blocks will sit. The first blocks are often set at a corner to mark the wall boundaries.

Mortar is placed on the face shells of the blocks, which are the outward-facing surfaces. It is also applied at the ends of each block. This helps form the vertical joints between blocks and supports a tight fit. In taller or load-bearing walls, reinforcement may be added in the horizontal and vertical joints. Steel bars are one material that can be used for this support.

As the wall rises, each new course, or row, is checked for level and alignment with a spirit level. The height of each course is measured with a folding rule or a story pole. These checks help keep the wall straight and even as construction continues.

The final step is finishing the mortar joints. The joints are tooled into a concave shape, which helps water run off and gives the wall a cleaner look. Any extra mortar is brushed away with a soft brush. A standard concrete block is about 8 inches high, which helps it line up neatly with multiple layers of bricks in composite wall structures.
