Beim Mischen von Beton wird oft etwas Luft im Zementleim eingeschlossen.
Diese eingeschlossenen Luftporen können bis zu 120 mil erreichen, was wesentlich größer ist als die Kapillarporen und sich negativ auf die Festigkeit des Betons auswirken kann.

Total Voids in Concrete

Die gesamten Hohlräume im Beton umfassen das Gelwasservolumen, Kapillarporen und eingeschlossene Luft. Gelwasser (das in den Zementhydratationsprodukten zurückgehalten wird) und physikalisch eingeschlossenes oder adsorbiertes Wasser sind für den Hydratationsprozess von Bedeutung. Bei vollständiger Hydratation verdoppelt sich schätzungsweise der für die Produkte eines Kubikzentimeters Zement benötigte Raum. Kapillarporen bilden den freien Raum innerhalb des hydratisierten Zementleims, wobei ihre Größe weitgehend vom Wasser-Zement-Verhältnis und dem Hydratationsgrad abhängt.


 Beim Mischen wird im Beton eine kleine Menge Luft eingeschlossen, wodurch Hohlräume entstehen, die erheblich größer sein können als Kapillarporen, was die Festigkeit des Betons potenziell schwächen kann. Die Größe dieser Lufteinschlüsse variiert, wobei eingeschlossene Hohlräume bis zu 3 Millimeter groß sein können und damit viel größer sind als die feineren Kapillarporen, deren Durchmesser zwischen Nanometern und einigen Mikrometern liegt. Die Verteilung dieser Kapillarporen gilt als genauerer Indikator für die Beurteilung der Eigenschaften von hydratisiertem Zementleim als die Gesamtporosität.


 Lufteinschlüsse sind, im Gegensatz zu den unregelmäßig geformten Kapillarporen, kugelförmig geformt. Diese Poren haben erhebliche Auswirkungen auf Beton und beeinträchtigen dessen Festigkeit und Durchlässigkeit. Um die Eigenschaften des Betons zu optimieren, ist es wichtig, das Volumen und die Verteilung dieser Poren zu verstehen und zu kontrollieren.

Concrete voids affect both strength and permeability. They include gel water, capillary pores, and entrapped air. In hydrated cement paste, gel water is held within the cement hydration products. Physically entrapped or adsorbed water also supports the hydration process.

As cement hydrates, the space needed for the products from a cubic centimeter of cement is estimated to double. Capillary pores are the open spaces left inside the hydrated paste. Their size depends mainly on the water-to-cement ratio and the degree of hydration. The pattern of these pores can give a better picture of hydrated cement paste than total porosity alone.

Concrete also traps a small amount of air during mixing. These air voids can be much larger than capillary pores and may weaken concrete strength. Entrapped air voids can reach up to 3 millimeters in size. By comparison, capillary voids range from nanometers to a few micrometers.

Air voids are usually spherical. Capillary voids are more irregular in shape. Because void volume and void distribution affect concrete so strongly, understanding and controlling them helps improve concrete properties.
