Pore Size Distribution

Kapillarporen sind deutlich größer als Gelporen, und im ausgehärteten Zementleim gibt es verschiedene Porengrößen.
Bei teilweiser Hydratation enthält die Paste ein Netzwerk von Kapillarporen, was zu einer höheren Durchlässigkeit und einer erhöhten Anfälligkeit für Schäden durch Frost-Tau-Zyklen, chemische Exposition und verminderte Festigkeit führt.
Diese Probleme können wirksam gemildert werden, wenn der Hydratationsgrad hoch genug ist, um das bestehende Kapillarporennetzwerk durch die Bildung von neuem Zementgel zu stören und dadurch die strukturelle Integrität des Betons zu verbessern.
In Pasten mit einem niedrigen Wasser-Zement-Verhältnis, das gut hydratisiert ist, liegt die Größe der Kapillarporen typischerweise zwischen 0,4 und 2 Mikrozoll.
Umgekehrt können sich diese Poren bei Pasten mit einem hohen Wasser-Zement-Verhältnis und den Anfangsstadien der Hydratation über 120 bis 200 Mikrozoll erstrecken.
Es wird angenommen, dass Poren, die größer als 2 Mikrozoll sind, sogenannte Makroporen, eine wichtigere Rolle für die Festigkeit und Undurchlässigkeit des Materials spielen.
Es wurde vorgeschlagen, dass die Analyse der Verteilung der Porengrößen eine genauere Beurteilung der Eigenschaften eines hydratisierten Zementmasses ermöglicht als die einfache Messung der Gesamtporosität der Kapillaren.

Bei Beton beeinflusst die Porengrößenverteilung die Materialeigenschaften erheblich.  Eine ausreichende Hydratation unterbricht dieses Kapillarnetzwerk, da die Bildung von neuem Zementgel die Poren segmentiert, was die Festigkeit effektiv erhöht und die Durchlässigkeit verringert. Der Hydratationsgrad, der zum Erreichen dieser Segmentierung und der daraus resultierenden verbesserten Haltbarkeit und geringeren Porosität erforderlich ist, hängt sowohl von der Feinheit des Zements als auch vom Wasser-Zement-Verhältnis ab. Ein niedrigeres Wasser-Zement-Verhältnis kann beständigeren Beton ergeben, der kürzere Aushärtungszeiten erfordert, um einen bestimmten Hydratationsgrad zu erreichen.

Concrete porosity and durability depend strongly on pore size distribution in hardened cement paste. Capillary pores are much larger than gel pores, and in partially hydrated cement paste they form a connected network that lowers strength and raises permeability.

Higher permeability makes concrete more vulnerable to freeze-thaw damage and chemical attack. The risk also depends on the water-to-cement ratio. A higher ratio can leave more space for capillary pores to remain open.

As cement hydrates, new cement gel forms and segments the capillary network. This change improves strength and reduces permeability. The hydration level needed for this segmentation depends on both cement fineness and the water-to-cement ratio.

Lower water-to-cement ratios can produce durable concrete. They also need shorter curing periods to reach a given degree of hydration. For cement paste, pore size distribution is a better measure of behavior than total porosity alone.

Pores larger than 50 nanometers are called macropores, and they have a major effect on strength and impermeability. Smaller pores, or micropores, matter more for drying shrinkage and creep. Understanding these pore sizes helps explain how concrete can resist structural and environmental stress.
