Die Rotationsströmung bezieht sich auf die Bewegung von Flüssigkeitspartikeln, die sich nicht entlang des Strömungswegs drehen, gekennzeichnet durch ein Geschwindigkeitsfeld mit null Kräuselung und ohne Vorticity.
Eine gleichmäßige Strömung mit nur einer Geschwindigkeitskomponente ungleich Null, einer konstanten u=U, ist ein Beispiel für eine Rotationsströmung, da ihr Geschwindigkeitsgradienten fehlen.
Wenn ein festes Objekt in eine gleichmäßige Strömung eingebracht wird, bleibt die Strömung außer in der Nähe der Grenzen unrotiert. In der Nähe der Oberfläche steigt die Geschwindigkeit von Null stark an, was zu steilen Gradienten und erheblichen Schubspannungen führt.
Im Falle einer wirklich viskosen Strömung würde die Strömung über die Grenze gleiten, wobei die Rotationsbewegung erhalten bleibt. In realen Flüssigkeiten bildet die Viskosität jedoch eine Grenzschicht in der Nähe fester Oberflächen, die Rotationseffekte hervorruft und manchmal eine stromabwärts liegende Trennung verursacht.
Bei der Rohrströmung weist der Eingangsbereich zunächst einen Rotationskern mit gleichmäßiger Strömung auf, geht aber mit der Bildung und Verdickung einer Grenzschicht entlang der Rohrwand in einen voll entwickelten Bereich über, der von viskosen Kräften dominiert wird.
Unter der Annahme, dass die Strömung irrotational, inkompressibel, stationär und viskos ist, kann die Bernoulli-Gleichung im Strömungsfeld angewendet werden.

Rotationsfreie Strömung ist durch eine Flüssigkeitsbewegung gekennzeichnet, bei der sich die Partikel nicht um ihre Achsen drehen, was zu einer Wirbelstärke von Null führt. Damit eine Strömung rotationsfrei ist, muss die Rotation des Geschwindigkeitsfelds Null sein. Dies stellt bestimmte Bedingungen an Geschwindigkeitsgradienten. Um beispielsweise eine Rotation von Null um die Z-Achse aufrechtzuerhalten, muss die Gradientenbedingung:

erfüllt sein, zusammen mit ähnlichen Bedingungen für andere Achsen:

Eine gleichmäßige Strömung, bei der u konstant und v und w beide Null sind, erfüllt diese Bedingungen und dient als einfaches Beispiel für eine rotationsfreie Strömung. Wenn jedoch ein fester Gegenstand eingeführt wird, bleibt die Rotationsfreiheit nur weit vom Gegenstand entfernt bestehen. In der Nähe der Grenze steigt die Geschwindigkeit stark von Null (aufgrund der Haftbedingung) auf den Freiströmungswert an, wodurch erhebliche Scherspannungen und eine Grenzschicht in viskosen Flüssigkeiten entstehen.

Wenn Flüssigkeit aus einem großen Reservoir in ein Rohr eintritt, ist der anfängliche Fluss nahezu gleichmäßig, was zu einem rotationsfreien Kern mit flacher Geschwindigkeitsverteilung führt. Während sich die Flüssigkeit stromabwärts bewegt, bildet sich aufgrund der Viskosität eine Grenzschicht entlang der Rohrwände, wodurch das Geschwindigkeitsprofil Gradienten entwickelt, die schließlich zu einem vollständig entwickelten parabolischen Profil führen. In diesem vollständig entwickelten Bereich dominieren Rotationseffekte in der Nähe der Wände, während ein zentraler Kern annähernd rotationsfrei bleiben kann.

Im anfänglich rotationsfreien Bereich des Rohrflusses kann die Bernoulli-Gleichung

zwischen Punkten entlang einer Stromlinie angewendet werden, da die Bedingungen der Inkompressibilität, des reibungsfreien Flusses und der Rotationsfreiheit gelten. Wenn jedoch die Grenzschicht wächst und Rotationseffekte in der Nähe der Wände signifikant werden, brechen die Annahmen der Bernoulli-Gleichung zusammen. Dies bedeutet, dass die Bernoulli-Gleichung nur im Eingangsbereich und im rotationsfreien Kern anwendbar ist, nicht jedoch im vollständig entwickelten Rotationsbereich, in dem Viskositätseffekte dominieren.

Irrotational flow is fluid motion in which particles do not spin around their own axes. It has zero vorticity, which means the curl of the velocity field is zero. That condition places limits on the velocity gradients in the flow.

A simple example is uniform flow. In this case, the velocity u stays constant, while v and w are both zero. This satisfies the irrotational conditions and gives a basic model of non-rotating flow.

When a solid object is added, irrotational flow usually remains only far from the object. Near the surface, the fluid speed rises sharply from zero because of the no-slip condition. This creates strong shear stress and a boundary layer in viscous fluids.

A similar change happens when fluid enters a pipe from a large reservoir. At first, the flow is nearly uniform, so the center region forms an irrotational core with a flat velocity profile. Farther downstream, viscosity causes boundary layers to grow along the pipe walls.

As the flow continues, the velocity profile develops more gradient and becomes fully developed and parabolic. In that region, rotational effects are strongest near the walls, while the center may still be approximately irrotational. Bernoulli's equation can apply in the entrance region and in the irrotational core, where the flow is incompressible, inviscid, and irrotational. It no longer applies well in the fully developed region, where viscosity and rotation dominate.
