Weibull- und Exponentialmodelle werden häufig in der Überlebensanalyse verwendet.
Eine Weibull-Verteilung mit zwei Parametern hat eine Überlebenskurve, die wie folgt dargestellt ist.
Hier bestimmt β die Gefährdungsfunktion. Ein Beta mehr als eins zeigt an, dass die Gefährdungsrate mit der Zeit zunimmt und das Risiko im Laufe der Zeit t zunimmt.
Ein Beta kleiner als eins zeigt an, dass die Hazard Rate im Laufe der Zeit abnimmt, und weist auf ein abnehmendes Risiko hin.
Ein Beta gleich eins gibt eine konstante Gefahrenrate an. Dadurch wird auch das Weibull-Modell in das Exponentialmodell geändert, das wie folgt ausgedrückt wird.
In der menschlichen Bevölkerung ist eine konstante Gefährdungsrate über einen langen Zeitraum weniger wahrscheinlich. Es kann jedoch davon ausgegangen werden, dass sie für eine kurze Dauer, z. B. 5 bis 10 Jahre, konstant ist.
Wenn ein Diagramm von Schätzungen von S(t) auf einer logarithmischen Skala eine gerade Linie ist, ist die Verwendung des Exponentialmodells für die Überlebensanalyse besser geeignet. Dies liegt daran, dass log S(t) = ₋λt zu einer Geraden wird, wobei ₋λ die Steigung ist.

Wenn \beta (β) > 1, steigt die Hazard Rate mit der Zeit an, was sie für die Modellierung von Prozessen wie Alterung geeignet macht, bei denen das Risiko mit der Zeit steigt. Dieses Modell ist weniger flexibel als das Weibull-Modell, ist aber in Situationen nützlich, in denen ein konstantes Risiko eine vernünftige Annahme ist, wie etwa bei der Modellierung der Zeit bis zum Ausfall bestimmter mechanischer Systeme oder Geräte.

In der Praxis hängt die Wahl zwischen dem Weibull- und dem Exponentialmodell von der Art der zugrunde liegenden Ausfallfunktion ab. Wenn sich die Hazard Rate über die Zeit ändert, bietet die Weibull-Verteilung eine genauere Anpassung. The Weibull distribution is a flexible model in parametric survival analysis. It can describe both increasing and decreasing hazard rates, depending on its shape parameter beta. When beta is greater than 1, the hazard rate rises over time. That pattern fits aging, where risk increases with time. When beta is less than 1, the hazard rate falls over time. That pattern can fit machine reliability, where failure risk drops after initial testing.

The Weibull model is useful in medical research, engineering, and reliability studies. It can adapt to different hazard patterns, so it works well when risk does not stay the same over time.

The exponential model is a simpler parametric survival model. It is a special case of the Weibull distribution with the shape parameter beta fixed at 1. In this model, the hazard rate stays constant over time. That means the chance of the event is the same no matter how much time has passed.

The exponential model is less flexible than the Weibull model, but it is useful when constant risk is a reasonable assumption. One example is time to failure for certain mechanical systems or devices.

In practice, the choice between these models depends on the hazard function. If the hazard rate changes over time, the Weibull distribution usually gives a better fit. If the risk stays constant, the exponential model can be easier to interpret and compute. Both models help explain survival times and support decisions in healthcare, reliability engineering, and other fields.
