Microbes in vaccines and gene therapy help modern medicine prevent disease and treat genetic disorders. Scientists use the biological properties of microorganisms to support public health, improve immune protection, and make therapeutic products. These uses also include gut health and antibiotic production.

Live attenuated vaccines use weakened pathogens, such as the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine. They act like a natural infection and can trigger cellular, humoral, and mucosal immune responses. Inactivated vaccines use killed pathogens or subunit parts, such as some polio vaccines. These usually drive humoral immunity, or antibody production, although some formulations can also support cellular responses when adjuvants are added.

Recombinant DNA technology has improved vaccine safety and effectiveness. In yeast-engineered hepatitis B vaccines, genetically modified yeast cells make the viral surface antigen HBsAg. This gives the immune system a target without using live virus. The same approach is also used in protein-based vaccines and in adjuvant design to improve antigen presentation and immune activation.

Microorganisms also changed the treatment of bacterial infections through antibiotic production. Penicillin came from Penicillium mold and marked a major step in fighting infection. Other antibiotics, including streptomycin and tetracycline, come from soil bacteria such as Streptomyces species. Researchers continue to study microbial metabolites to help address antibiotic resistance and find new drug options.

Not all microbes are harmful. Beneficial bacteria such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium help keep the gut microbiota balanced and support immune responses. These probiotics are studied for their possible role in preventing digestive disorders, improving overall immune function, and affecting brain health through the gut-brain axis. Scientists are also developing next-generation probiotics for more personalized microbiome-based therapies.

Viruses can be useful in gene therapy because they can deliver genetic material into cells. Adenoviruses and lentiviruses are common viral vectors. Lentiviral vectors can integrate therapeutic genes into the host genome, usually in transcriptionally active regions, which can support long-lasting gene expression while lowering the risk of insertional mutagenesis. This strategy offers hope for conditions such as cystic fibrosis, hemophilia, and inherited blindness.

mRNA vaccines are another major advance in immunization. They tell host cells to make viral antigens, which prompts an immune response without using live pathogens. COVID-19 vaccines showed how quickly this platform can be developed and scaled. Researchers still must address cold storage needs and the possibility of only temporary immunity, but microbial biotechnology is likely to keep shaping vaccines, gene therapy, and precision medicine.
