Zum Beispiel kann Sauerstoff auf der Oberfläche eines Bodenteilchens reichlich vorhanden sein, aber nur wenige Millimeter im Inneren fehlen.Daher können aerobe Mikroben die äußere, sauerstoffreiche Zone besetzen, während anaerob Mikroben die inneren, anoxischen Regionen bewohnen.Auch die Mikroumgebung kann zeitliche Veränderungen durchlaufen.Zum Beispiel steigen im Mikroumfeld einer aquatischen mikrobiellen Gemeinschaft der Sauerstoffgehalt tagsüber durch Photosynthese an und sinken nachts, wenn die Atmung dominiert.Dadurch werden aerobe Mikroben tagsüber aktiver.Im Laufe der Zeit können solche zeitlichen Veränderungen die räumliche Struktur mikrobieller Gemeinschaften umformen.Aerobe und photosynthetische Mikroben besiedeln die oberen Schichten, während andere sich in tieferen Bereichen niederlassen.

Mikroorganismen bewohnen stark lokalisierte Räume, die als Mikroumgebungen bekannt sind und durch unterschiedliche physikalische und chemische Eigenschaften definiert sind. Dazu gehören Sauerstoffkonzentration, pH-Wert, Temperatur, Lichtverfügbarkeit und Nährstoffgehalt. Die Bedingungen in einer Mikroumgebung können sich deutlich von denen im umliegenden Bereich unterscheiden und das Wachstum der Mikrobien, den Stoffwechsel und die Gemeinschaftsstruktur erheblich beeinflussen.Mikroumgebungen zeigen oft scharfe physikochemische Gradienten auf kleinen räumlichen Skalen. Zum Beispiel kann in Bodenpartikeln Sauerstoff nahe der Oberfläche leicht verfügbar sein, aber nur wenige Millimeter darunter erschöpft sein. Dies schafft einen geschichteten Lebensraum, in dem aerobe Mikroben sauerstoffreiche Zonen auf der Partikeloberfläche besiedeln, während anaerobe Mikroben die tieferen, anoxischen Regionen besetzen. Wenn der Sauerstoffgehalt tagsüber steigt, werden aerobe Mikroben aktiver und können ihre Präsenz in den oberen Schichten des Biofilms ausweiten. Andererseits macht Sauerstoffmangel nachts anaerob Populationen in bestimmten Regionen dominanter. Diese täglichen Zyklen beeinflussen nicht nur die mikrobielle Aktivität, sondern verändern auch allmählich die räumliche Organisation der Gemeinschaft. Im Laufe der Zeit stabilisieren sich photosynthetische und aerobe Mikroorganismen in den Oberflächenschichten, während sich andere Gruppen an die tieferen, beständiger anoxischen Zonen anpassen.Solch komplexe räumliche und zeitliche Dynamiken machen Mikroumgebungen entscheidend für die Gestaltung mikrobieller Ökosysteme und beeinflussen sowohl die Zusammensetzung der Gemeinschaften als auch die metabolischen Interaktionen in verschiedenen Lebensräumen.

Microorganisms live in tiny habitats called microenvironments. These spaces have their own physical and chemical conditions. Oxygen level, pH, temperature, light, and nutrient supply can all differ from the surrounding area. These local conditions strongly affect microbial growth, metabolism, and which species can live there.

Microenvironments often have sharp gradients over very small distances. In soil, oxygen may be available at the particle surface but drop off just a few millimeters below. This creates layers in the habitat. Aerobic microbes, which need oxygen, live near the surface, while anaerobic microbes, which do not use oxygen, occupy deeper anoxic zones.

This layering lets many microorganisms with different needs exist close together. Each group fits a specific niche within the microenvironment. The result is a mixed community shaped by local conditions rather than by the wider environment alone.

Microenvironments can also change over time. Aquatic biofilms show daily shifts in oxygen because photosynthesis raises oxygen levels during daylight, while respiration lowers them at night. As oxygen rises, aerobic microbes become more active and may spread through the upper layers. When oxygen drops at night, anaerobic populations become more dominant in some regions.

Over time, these daily cycles can change the structure of the community. Photosynthetic and aerobic microorganisms tend to settle in surface layers. Other groups adapt to the deeper, more consistently anoxic zones. These spatial and time-based changes make microenvironments important in shaping microbial ecosystems and the metabolic interactions within them.
