Afternoon Napping

Afternoon napping is a brief period of daytime sleep, typically taken after midday, that temporarily changes arousal, alertness, and behavior. It works by reducing homeostatic sleep pressure that builds during wakefulness while interacting with the circadian rhythm’s afternoon variation in alertness; nap timing and duration can therefore affect sleep inertia and subsequent nighttime sleep. In behavioral research, afternoon naps provide a useful model for examining sleep regulation, memory, attention, mood, and daily performance. Studying individual differences in nap need and response may also clarify how sleep habits influence health and behavior.

This protocol describes methods used to examine neural mechanisms underlying sleep-dependent memory consolidation during naps in early childhood. It includes procedures for examining the effect of sleep on behavioral memory performance, as well as the application and recording of both polysomnography and actigraphy.

One-step Negative Chromatographic Purification of Helicobacter pylori Neutrophil-activating Protein Overexpressed in Escherichia coli in Batch Mode

2016

A high yield method for one-step negative purification of recombinant Helicobacter pylori neutrophil-activating protein (HP-NAP) overexpressed in Escherichia coli by using diethylaminoethyl resins in batch mode is described. HP-NAP purified by this method is beneficial for the development of vaccines, drugs, or diagnostics for H. pylori-associated diseases.

Evaluating the Anti-Tumor Efficacy of a Bacterial Immunomodulatory Protein in a Murine Model

2025

This video demonstrates a technique to assess the anti-tumor activity of Helicobacter pylori neutrophil-activating protein, or HP-NAP, in a mouse bladder cancer model. HP-NAP interacts with tumor-cell neutrophils to produce pro-inflammatory cytokines, inducing the differentiation of naïve T cells into type 1 T helper (Th1) and type 1 cytotoxic (Tc1) T cell phenotypes. The Th1 and Tc1 cells secrete interferon-gamma, inhibiting tumor angiogenesis and promoting cytotoxic T cell-mediated tumor...

Peering into the Dynamics of Social Interactions: Measuring Play Fighting in Rats

2013

Play fighting in the rat involves attack and defense of the nape of the neck, which if contacted, is gently nuzzled with the snout. Because the movements of one animal are countered by the actions of its partner, play fighting is a complex, dynamic interaction. This dynamic complexity raises methodological problems about what to score for experimental studies. We present a scoring schema that is sensitive to the correlated nature of the actions performed. Two experiments illustrate how these...
