Reaction Time Data

Reaction time data are measurements of the time between a stimulus and a participant’s behavioral response, providing a quantitative window into how behavior unfolds. Researchers collect these data in tasks such as simple, choice, or go/no-go reactions, then analyze response latency, variability, and accuracy to distinguish sensory processing, decision-making, and motor execution. In behavioral research, reaction time data help assess attention, perception, learning, memory, and response inhibition, while comparisons across conditions can reveal how task demands or experimental manipulations affect performance. Careful control of instructions, timing, practice, and outlier responses is essential for reliable interpretation.

Measuring Reaction Time and Donders' Method of Subtraction

2023

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University The ambition of experimental psychology is to characterize the mental events that support the human ability to solve problems, perceive the world, and turn thoughts into words and sentences. But people cannot see or feel those mental events; they cannot be weighed, combined in test tubes, or grown in a dish. Wanting to study mental life, nonetheless, Franciscus Donders, a Dutch ophthalmologist in the early 1800s, came up with a...

Real-time monitoring allows for fast optimization of reactions performed using continuous-flow processing. Here the preparation of 3-acetylcoumarin is used as an example. The apparatus for performing in-situ Raman monitoring is described, as are the steps required to optimize the reaction.

Real-time Flight Control: Embedded Sensor Calibration and Data Acquisition

Source: Ella M. Atkins, Department of Aerospace Engineering, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI Overview Autopilot allows aircraft to be stabilized using data collected from onboard sensors that measure the aircraft’s orientation, angular velocity, and airspeed. These quantities can be adjusted by the autopilot so that the aircraft automatically follows a flight plan from launch (takeoff) through recovery (landing). Similar sensor data is collected to control all types of aircraft, from...

The 5-Choice Serial Reaction Time Task: A Task of Attention and Impulse Control for Rodents

This protocol describes the 5-choice serial reaction time task, which is an operant based task used to study attention and impulse control in rodents. Test day challenges, which are modifications of the standard task, increase flexibility of the task and can be combined with other manipulations to more fully characterize behavior.
