Viral Peptides

Viral peptides are short amino acid sequences derived from viral proteins or designed to represent viral regions, making them useful tools for studying infection and host responses. Their biological activity depends on sequence, structure, charge, and hydrophobicity, which determine how they bind host molecules, interact with membranes, or present recognizable epitopes to immune cells. In biological techniques, researchers use viral peptides to map antibody and T-cell responses, develop diagnostic assays, evaluate antiviral compounds, and guide vaccine design. Because they isolate defined molecular features from larger viral proteins, these peptides support controlled experiments in virology, immunology, and therapeutic research.

Viral Recombination

2019

Cells are sometimes infected by more than one virus at once. When two viruses disassemble to expose their genomes for replication in the same cell, similar regions of their genomes can pair together and exchange sequences in a process called recombination. Alternatively, viruses with segmented genomes can swap segments in a process called reassortment. Viral Recombination Can Create New Diseases Some diseases can infect multiple species. For example, pigs can be infected by some human and...

Viral Structure

Viruses are extraordinarily diverse in shape and size, but they all have several structural features in common. All viruses have a core that contains a DNA- or RNA-based genome. The core is surrounded by a protective coat of proteins called the capsid. The capsid is composed of subunits called capsomeres. The capsid and genome-containing core are together known as the nucleocapsid. Structural Classes of Viruses Many criteria are used to classify viruses, including capsid design. Most viruses...
