Allele Frequency Calculation

Allele frequency calculation is a population-genetics method for determining how common a specific allele is within a population, providing a foundation for studying genetic variation and evolution. It works by counting copies of the allele and dividing by the total number of allele copies at that genetic locus; in diploid organisms, homozygous individuals contribute two copies of one allele, while heterozygous individuals contribute one copy of each allele. Researchers use these frequencies to compare populations, track changes across generations, assess genetic diversity, and evaluate processes such as natural selection, mutation, migration, and genetic drift.

Multiple Allele Traits

2021

For the same gene multiple alleles can interact to influence phenotypes like the shape and protein composition of an individual cells.By studying allele interactions on the molecular and cellular levels researchers can understand the resulting phenotypes and complications of human conditions like sickle cell trait, improving treatment. The ABO blood group system is a common example of multiple alleles in humans. This system includes three alleles called IA, IB, and i alleles, which combine in...

An Allele-specific Gene Expression Assay to Test the Functional Basis of Genetic Associations

Cited by 2 •

2010

Genetic associations often remain unexplained at a functional level. This method aims to assess the effect of phenotype-associated genetic markers on gene expression by analyzing cells heterozygous for transcribed SNPs. The technology allows accurate measurement by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry to quantify allele-specific primer extension products.

Lethal Alleles

Agouti: A Lethal Allele Lucien Cuénot discovered lethal alleles in 1905 while studying the inheritance of coat color in mice. The agouti gene is responsible for the color of the coat in mice. This gene codes for an agouti-signaling protein, which is responsible for melanin distribution in mammals. The wild-type allele gives rise to gray-brown coat color in mice, while the mutant allele gives rise to yellow coat color. In addition to coat color, the agouti gene is associated with the yellow...

Calculating the Equilibrium Constant

2020

The equilibrium constant for a reaction is calculated from the equilibrium concentrations (or pressures) of its reactants and products. If these concentrations are known, the calculation simply involves their substitution into the Kc expression. For example, gaseous nitrogen dioxide forms dinitrogen tetroxide according to this equation: When 0.10 mol NO2 is added to a 1.0-L flask at 25 °C, the concentration changes so that at equilibrium, [NO2] = 0.016 M and [N2O4] = 0.042 M. The value of the...
