Calorie Restriction Lifespan

Calorie restriction lifespan refers to the study of how sustained reductions in calorie intake, without malnutrition, may influence aging and longevity. In biological research, limiting energy availability can alter nutrient-sensing pathways, metabolism, cellular stress responses, and processes involved in maintenance and repair, potentially slowing age-related decline. Experiments in organisms such as yeast, worms, flies, and rodents have linked dietary restriction with longer life or improved healthspan, although effects vary by species, diet composition, age, and genetic background. Research in biology examines these mechanisms to clarify whether calorie restriction or related interventions can inform strategies for healthy aging in humans.

Invertebrate Lifespan Quantification

Many animals naturally stop growing upon reaching adulthood, after which they undergo aging or "senescence" until dying. The amount of time between an organism\'s birth and death is called its lifespan, which can be influenced by various biological and environmental factors. By exposing organisms to different growth conditions, scientists can better understand the factors affecting lifespan. Flies and worms are ideal organisms to perform such experiments, given their short generation time and...

Restriction enzymes or endonucleases recognize and cut DNA at a specific sequence. These enzymes occur naturally in bacteria as a defense against bacteriophages - viruses that infect bacteria. Bacterial restriction enzymes cut the invading bacteriophage DNA while leaving the bacterial genomic DNA unharmed due to addition of methyl groups. This video explains the basic principles of restriction enzymes including: how restriction enzymes are named and the types of recognition sites and...
