Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia

Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) is a group of inherited disorders that impair steroid hormone production in the adrenal glands, making it important in genetics, endocrinology, and developmental biology. In the most common form, 21-hydroxylase deficiency reduces cortisol and sometimes aldosterone synthesis; reduced negative feedback increases adrenocorticotropic hormone, driving adrenal enlargement and excess androgen production. CAH can affect salt balance, growth, puberty, and sexual development, with severity ranging from life-threatening adrenal crises to milder, later-onset disease. Newborn screening, hormone analysis, genetic testing, and clinical assessment support diagnosis, while glucocorticoid and, when needed, mineralocorticoid replacement guide management.

2017

'Super-selective' adrenal venous sampling (ssAVS, also called segmental adrenal venous sampling: sAVS) was performed using a micro-catheter to identify adrenal segment(s) that produce excessive amounts of hormones. The ssAVS technique was described, cases in which adrenal segmental lesion(s) were identified by ssAVS were presented, and the usefulness of ssAVS in future adrenal research was discussed.

Adrenal activity can be assessed in the equine species by analysis of feces for corticosterone metabolites. The method offers a non-invasive option to assess long term patterns in both domestic and free ranging horses. This protocol describes the enzyme linked immunoassay involved and the associated biochemical validation.

Anatomy of the Adrenal Glands

2024

The adrenal or supra-renal glands, situated above the kidneys and aligned with the twelfth rib, are paired pyramid-shaped structures crucial for the body's stress response. During stress, these glands secrete hormones vital for adaptive physiological reactions. These glands possess a distinctive yellow tinge due to the stored cholesterol and fatty acids required for hormone synthesis. They are encased in a fibrous capsule and cushioned by fat. The adrenal gland comprises two distinct regions...
