Desmotubule

A desmotubule is a narrow, endoplasmic reticulum-derived tubule that runs through the center of a plant plasmodesma, where it helps connect the ER of neighboring cells. Its closely apposed membrane with the surrounding plasma membrane divides the plasmodesma into a cytoplasmic sleeve, allowing regulated movement of small molecules, proteins, and signaling factors while maintaining membrane continuity. Desmotubules are therefore important to plant cell-to-cell communication, coordination of development, and responses to environmental stimuli. Their structure and interaction with plasmodesmal components also help researchers understand how plants control intercellular transport and how pathogens exploit these channels.
