Electron Excited State

An electron excited state is a higher-energy configuration in which an electron has absorbed energy and moved from its usual ground-state orbital to an available orbital. Excitation occurs when absorbed light or other energy matches the energy difference between these states, and the electron can return to the ground state by releasing energy as heat, light, or by transferring it to another molecule. In biology, these transitions underlie photosynthesis, fluorescence, and many spectroscopic methods used to study biomolecules. Measuring excited-state lifetimes and energy transfer helps researchers investigate molecular structure, reaction pathways, cellular imaging, and the efficiency of biological energy conversion.

2012

This abstract describes a novel method to assess the development of neurotoxicity in patients receiving chemotherapy treatment. While conventional assessment methods are limited in their ability to detect early changes in nerve function, nerve excitability techniques provide early identification of patients at risk of severe neurotoxicity and insight into pathophysiology.

Using TMS to Measure Motor Excitability During Action Observation

2023

Source: Laboratories of Jonas T. Kaplan and Sarah I. Gimbel—University of Southern California Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique that involves passing current through an insulated coil placed against the scalp. A brief magnetic field is created by current in the coil, and because of the physical process of induction, this leads to a current in the nearby neural tissue. Depending on the duration, frequency, and magnitude of these magnetic...
