Intrahepatic Jaundice

Intrahepatic jaundice is yellow discoloration of the skin and eyes caused by impaired bilirubin processing within the liver, making it an important sign of hepatocellular or intrahepatic biliary disease. It develops when injured hepatocytes cannot efficiently take up, conjugate, or excrete bilirubin, or when inflammation and cholestasis disrupt bile flow through the liver. Conditions such as viral hepatitis, drug-induced liver injury, and alcohol-related disease can produce this pattern. Evaluating bilirubin fractions alongside aminotransferases, alkaline phosphatase, clinical history, and imaging helps distinguish intrahepatic jaundice from hemolytic or extrahepatic causes and guides treatment.

Jaundice, or icterus, is the yellow discoloration of the skin, sclerae, and mucous membranes. It happens when plasma bilirubin levels rise above 2.5-3 mg/dL, leading to bilirubin deposition in tissue.Bilirubin is a byproduct of hemoglobin degradation. In macrophages, hemoglobin breaks down into globin and heme. Globin is converted into amino acids, while heme is turned into biliverdin by heme oxygenase, which is then reduced to unconjugated bilirubin by biliverdin reductase.Unconjugated...

Human tumor xenografts in immunodeficient mice are valuable tools to study cancer biology. Specific protocols to generate subcutaneous and intrahepatic xenografts from human hepatocellular carcinoma cells or tumor fragments are described. Liver regeneration induced by partial hepatectomy in recipient mice is presented as a strategy to facilitate intrahepatic engraftment.
