Rabbit Bone Infection

Rabbit bone infection, or osteomyelitis, is an inflammatory infection of bone tissue that can impair skeletal function and healing. In rabbits, bacteria may reach bone through contaminated wounds, surgical sites, nearby soft-tissue infections, or the bloodstream, triggering immune inflammation, tissue damage, and sometimes necrosis that limits antibiotic penetration and disrupts new bone formation. Studying this condition in biology supports investigation of host-pathogen interactions, disease progression, diagnostic methods, and treatment responses, including antimicrobial therapy and surgical management. Rabbit models can also help researchers evaluate infection-control strategies and understand how bone structure and immune responses influence recovery.

This study presents an improved rabbit model infected with Staphylococcus aureus by blocking the same amount of bacteria in bone marrow. Vancomycin loaded calcium sulphate and autogenous bone are used for antibiotic and bone repair treatment. The protocol could be helpful for studying bone infection and regeneration.

Here we present a surgical protocol in rabbits with the aim to assess bone substitution materials in terms of bone regeneration capacities. By using PEEK cylinders fixed onto rabbit skulls, osteoconduction, osteoinduction, osteogenesis and vasculogenesis induced by the materials may be evaluated either on live or euthanized animals.
