Survival Curve Generation

Survival curve generation is a statistical method for describing the time until a defined biological event occurs, such as death, disease progression, or loss of viability. It estimates the proportion of a population remaining event-free over time, commonly using the Kaplan–Meier method, which forms a stepwise curve by incorporating observed events and right-censored samples that have not yet experienced the outcome or are no longer observed. In biology, survival curves help compare experimental groups, assess treatment effects, analyze organismal lifespan, and evaluate cell or tissue viability. These analyses reveal differences in event timing while accounting for incomplete follow-up.

Survival curves are graphical representations that depict the survival experience of a population over time, offering an intuitive way to track the proportion of individuals who remain event-free at each time point. These curves are widely used in fields such as medicine, public health, and reliability engineering to visualize and compare survival probabilities across different groups or conditions. The Kaplan-Meier estimator is the most common method for constructing survival curves. This...

Lifespan Protocol for Drosophila melanogaster: Generating Survival Curves to Identify Differences in Fly Longevity

2023

Scientists use the Drosophila lifespan protocol to measure how different experimental conditions affect flies' longevity and generate survival curves in the process to quantify the experimental outcomes. The sample protocol features the assay being applied to study the effects on longevity from exposure to varying concentrations of endocrine disruptor chemicals, or EDCs, such as 17-α-ethinylestradiol (EE2).

DiRita1 1 Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan, United States of America Growth curves provide valuable information on bacterial growth kinetics and cell physiology. They allow us to determine how bacteria respond in variable growth conditions as well as to define optimal growth parameters for a given bacterium. An archetypal growth curve progresses...
