Laparoscopic Biopsy

Laparoscopic biopsy is a minimally invasive procedure that removes a small tissue sample through one or more abdominal incisions for microscopic examination, helping characterize suspected disease while limiting surgical trauma. Under general anesthesia, a surgeon inserts a laparoscope and specialized instruments, uses the camera to visualize internal organs, and excises or retrieves targeted tissue for histopathological analysis. In cancer research and diagnosis, biopsy specimens can distinguish malignant from benign changes, establish tumor type and grade, and support molecular testing of biomarkers that guide treatment studies. The approach can sample lesions that are difficult to assess externally and may provide valuable material for correlating tumor biology with clinical outcomes.

In early gastric cancer, the aim of surgery is to precisely remove the distal stomach including the primary tumor. To do this, accurate localization of the tumor is crucial, especially in totally laparoscopic surgery. This protocol describes a procedure for intraoperative gastroscopy in totally laparoscopic subtotal gastrectomy.
