Alpha Protons

Alpha protons are hydrogen atoms attached to the carbon directly adjacent to a carbonyl group in aldehydes, ketones, esters, and related compounds. They are relatively acidic because deprotonation forms an enolate ion, whose negative charge is stabilized by resonance between the alpha carbon and the carbonyl oxygen. Under basic or acidic conditions, enolates and enols can participate in reactions such as alkylation, aldol condensation, and halogenation, creating new carbon-carbon bonds or modifying molecular structure. Understanding alpha-proton reactivity helps chemists predict reaction pathways, design synthetic strategies, and control selectivity in organic synthesis.

Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells

2023

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University The United States consumes a large amount of energy – the current rate is around 97.5 quadrillion BTUs annually. The vast majority (90%) of this energy comes from non-renewable fuel sources. This energy is used for electricity (39%), transportation (28%), industry (22%), and residential/commercial use (11%). As the world has a limited supply of these non-renewable sources, the United States (among others) is...

This video demonstrates the immunostaining of neurons treated with alpha-synuclein (αS) aggregates. The neurons are first treated with αS aggregates. They are then fixed, permeabilized, and treated with a blocking solution. Primary antibodies are added, followed by a fluorescently labeled secondary antibodies and a nuclear stain. The sample is then mounted and observed under a microscope.

The motion regimes of ibuprofen encapsulated in β-cyclodextrin nanosponges polymer network are investigated using pulsed-field-gradient spin-echo (PGSE) NMR technique. Synthesis, purification, drug loading, implementation of the NMR pulse sequence and data analysis to work out the mean square displacement of the drug at several observation times are described in detail.

Induction of Neuroinflammation in Mice via Injection of Alpha-Synuclein Fibrils

2025

This video demonstrates the injection of alpha-synuclein fibrils into a mouse to induce neuroinflammation. The fibrils are injected intraperitoneally into a transgenic mouse expressing mutated alpha-synuclein proteins. Upon reaching the central nervous system, the fibrils enter neurons and induce aggregation of the mutated proteins. The aggregates spread to neighboring neurons, microglia, and astrocytes. Recognition of the aggregates triggers microglia to induce neuroinflammation, damaging the...
