Aluminum Chloride

Aluminum chloride is an inorganic compound composed of aluminum and chlorine, widely used in chemistry as a Lewis acid and reagent. In its anhydrous form, it accepts electron pairs from molecules such as carbonyl compounds, and it can form dimeric Al2Cl6 through bridging chloride atoms; contact with water causes hydrolysis and releases hydrogen chloride. These properties make aluminum chloride useful for catalyzing Friedel–Crafts alkylation and acylation, promoting carbon-carbon bond formation in organic synthesis. Hydrated forms also serve in industrial processes, including water treatment and antiperspirant formulations, while its moisture sensitivity requires controlled handling.

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA Aluminum is one of the most abundant materials in our lives, as it is omnipresent in everything from soda cans to airplane components. Its widespread use is relatively recent (1900AD), primarily because aluminum does not occur in its free state, but rather in combination with oxygen and other elements, often in the form of Al2O3. Aluminum was originally obtained from bauxite mineral deposits...
