Conduction Band

The conduction band is an energy range in a solid where electrons can move through the material, making it central to understanding electrical conductivity in chemistry and materials science. In semiconductors and insulators, electrons usually occupy the lower-energy valence band; when they gain sufficient thermal, optical, or electrical energy to cross the band gap, they enter the conduction band, where delocalized states support charge transport. The band’s energy, occupancy, and separation from the valence band help explain differences among metals, semiconductors, and insulators and guide the design of photovoltaic materials, electronic devices, sensors, and photocatalysts.

When two or more atoms come together to form a molecule, their atomic orbitals combine and molecular orbitals of distinct energies result. In a solid, there are a large number of atoms, and therefore a large number of atomic orbitals that may be combined into molecular orbitals. These groups of molecular orbitals are so closely placed together to form continuous regions of energies, known as the bands. The energy difference between these bands is known as the band gap. Conductor, Semiconductor,...

Isolated atoms have discrete energy levels that are well described by the Bohr model. And, it quantifies the energy of an electron in a hydrogen atom as En. Higher quantum numbers 'n' yield less negative, closer electron energy levels. Band Formation: When atoms are brought close together, as in a solid, these discrete energy levels begin to split due to the overlap of electron orbitals from adjacent atoms. This split occurs because of the Pauli exclusion principle, which states that no two...

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Dana Lashley - College of William and Mary Demonstration by: Matt Smith When new bonds are formed in the course of a chemical reaction, it requires that the involved species (atoms or molecules) come in very close proximity and collide into one another. The collisions between these species are more frequent and effective the higher the speed at which these molecules are moving. A widely used rule of thumb, which has its roots in the Arrhenius equation1, states that...

Conduct Disorder

Conduct disorder is a complex mental health diagnosis characterized by a repetitive and persistent pattern of behavior that violates societal norms, the rights of others, or age-appropriate rules. The diagnostic criteria for conduct disorder require the presence of at least three problematic behaviors within the past 12 months, with at least one occurring in the past six months. These behaviors are grouped into four categories: aggression toward people and animals; destruction of property;...
