Excited State Dynamics

Excited State Dynamics describes how molecules and materials evolve after absorbing energy, capturing electronic excitation, vibrational relaxation, energy transfer, and transitions between electronic states. In chemistry, photon absorption promotes an electron to a higher energy state, after which the system can undergo internal conversion, intersystem crossing, fluorescence, phosphorescence, or nonradiative decay on ultrafast to longer timescales. These pathways depend on molecular structure, solvent, temperature, and interactions with neighboring species, and they determine how excitation becomes stored, transferred, or released. Measuring these dynamics with time-resolved spectroscopic methods helps explain photochemical reactivity, energy transfer, charge separation, and the performance of light-responsive catalysts, sensors, and photovoltaic materials.

2025

Dynamic clamp electrophysiology can establish causal links between neuronal firing deficits and ion channel dysfunction. We describe dynamic clamp methods and protocols in mouse cerebellar Purkinje neurons, noting useful resources and technical considerations. In a representative study, we add modeled sodium conductance to Tsc1-/- Purkinje neurons to rescue repetitive firing.

This abstract describes a novel method to assess the development of neurotoxicity in patients receiving chemotherapy treatment. While conventional assessment methods are limited in their ability to detect early changes in nerve function, nerve excitability techniques provide early identification of patients at risk of severe neurotoxicity and insight into pathophysiology.

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA It is rare nowadays that a whole year goes by without a major earthquake event wreaking havoc somewhere around the world. In some cases, like the 2005 Banda Ache earthquake in Indonesia, the damage involved large geographic areas and casualties in the six figures. In general, the number and intensity of earthquakes is not increasing, however, the vulnerability of the built environment is...
