Gelcasting

Gelcasting is a colloidal processing method that shapes ceramic or other particulate materials by converting a fluid suspension into a rigid, polymer-supported body. In this process, fine particles are dispersed in a liquid containing organic monomers and additives, then in situ polymerization forms a three-dimensional gel that immobilizes the particles and preserves the desired shape during drying. The resulting green body can be removed from the mold and thermally treated to eliminate organic components and densify the material. Gelcasting enables complex geometries, near-net-shape fabrication, and improved control of microstructure, making it valuable in ceramic processing and materials chemistry.
