Hammond Postulate

The Hammond Postulate is a principle of physical organic chemistry stating that a transition state most closely resembles the stable species nearest to it in energy along a reaction coordinate. For an exothermic step, the transition state is typically early and reactant-like, whereas an endothermic step usually has a later, product-like transition state; this relationship connects reaction energetics with molecular structure. Chemists use the postulate to infer transition-state geometry, compare reaction pathways, rationalize substituent and solvent effects, and predict how structural changes may influence reaction rates, selectivity, and the stability of intermediates in chemical mechanisms.

Basic Postulates of Kinetic Molecular Theory: Particle Size, Energy, and Collision

The ideal-gas equation, which is empirical, describes the behavior of gases by establishing relationships between their macroscopic properties. For example, Charles’ law states that volume and temperature are directly related. Gases, therefore, expand when heated at constant pressure. Although gas laws explain how the macroscopic properties change relative to one another, it does not explain the rationale behind it. The kinetic molecular theory is a microscopic model that helps understand what...

In this protocol, we outline the conceptual design elements and structural development of a glare acuity apparatus. Additionally, the design of a device for measuring positive dysphotopsia (halos, spokes) and two-point light thresholds is described.

The Atomic Theory of Matter

The earliest recorded discussion of the basic structure of matter comes from ancient Greek philosophers. Leucippus and Democritus argued that all matter was composed of small, finite particles that they called atomos, meaning “indivisible.” Later, Aristotle and others came to the conclusion that matter consisted of various combinations of the four “elements” — fire, earth, air, and water — and could be infinitely divided. Interestingly, these philosophers thought about atoms and “elements” as...

A method to analyze the solvent accessibility of the thiol group of cysteine residues of Maize rayado fino virus (MRFV)-virus-like particles (VLPs) followed by a peptide cross-linking reaction is described. The method takes advantage of the availability of several chemical groups on the surface of the VLPs that can be targets for specific reactions.
