Incomplete Octet

Incomplete octet refers to a Lewis structure in which a central atom has fewer than eight electrons in its valence shell, providing an important exception to the octet rule in chemistry. This arrangement occurs when an atom, such as beryllium or boron, forms too few covalent bonds to complete an octet, while hydrogen and helium follow a stable two-electron duet. Electron-deficient centers can influence molecular geometry, bond polarity, and reactivity, and may accept electron pairs from donor molecules to form coordinate bonds. Recognizing incomplete octets helps students construct accurate Lewis structures and enables researchers to interpret bonding in compounds such as beryllium halides and boron hydrides.

Exceptions to the Octet Rule

Many covalent molecules have central atoms that do not have eight electrons in their Lewis structures. These molecules fall into three categories: Odd-electron molecules have an odd number of valence electrons and therefore have an unpaired electron. Electron-deficient molecules have a central atom with fewer electrons than needed for a noble gas configuration. Hypervalent molecules have a central atom that has more electrons than needed for a noble gas configuration. Odd-electron...

Lewis Symbols and the Octet Rule

Chemical bonds are complex interactions between two or more atoms or ions, which reduce the potential energy of the molecule. Gilbert N. Lewis developed a model called the Lewis model that simplified the depiction of chemical bond formation and provided straightforward explanations for the chemical bonds seen in most common compounds. Lewis Model The Lewis model depicts chemical bond formation by the sharing or transfer of valence electrons, which helps to attain a stable electron...

Incomplete Dominance

Gregor Mendel's work (1822 - 1884) was primarily focused on pea plants. Through his initial experiments, he determined that every gene in a diploid cell has two variants called alleles inherited from each parent. He suggested that amongst these two alleles, one allele is dominant in character and the other recessive. The combination of alleles determines the phenotype of a gene in an organism. According to Mendel, organisms with both copies or a single copy of the dominant allele display a...

This video illustrates testing of adjuvant or additional therapy in a mouse model with incompletely resected subcutaneous tumors. The partially tumor-resected mouse is treated with an antibody targeting the anti-cytotoxic protein of T regulatory cells, potentially reducing tumor regrowth and suggesting effective adjuvant therapy.
