Ion Dipole Attraction

Ion-dipole attraction is an electrostatic force between a charged ion and the partial charges of a polar molecule, and it helps explain how ionic substances interact with solvents. The attraction occurs when the oppositely charged end of a dipole orients toward the ion, producing hydration in water or solvation in other polar solvents; ion charge, distance, and molecular polarity influence its strength. Ion-dipole interactions drive the dissolution of many salts, organize solvent molecules around dissolved ions, and affect solution properties such as conductivity and boiling point. Understanding this interaction is essential for interpreting solubility, electrolyte behavior, and chemical reactions in solution.

Noncovalent Attractions in Biomolecules

2020

Noncovalent attractions are associations within and between molecules that influence the shape and structural stability of complexes. These interactions differ from covalent bonding in that they do not involve sharing of electrons. Four types of noncovalent interactions are hydrogen bonds, van der Waals forces, ionic bonds, and hydrophobic interactions. Hydrogen bonding results from the electrostatic attraction of a hydrogen atom covalently bonded to a strong-electronegative atom like oxygen,...

Electric Dipoles and Dipole Moment

Consider two charges of equal magnitude but opposite signs. If they cannot be separated by an external electric field, the system is called a permanent dipole. For example, the water molecule is a dipole, making it a good solvent. Theoretically, studying electric dipoles leads to understanding why the resultant electric forces around us are weak. Since electric forces are strong, remnant net charges are rare. Hence, the interaction between dipoles helps us understand electrical interactions in...

Bond Polarity The absolute value of the difference in electronegativity (ΔEN) of two bonded atoms provides a rough measure of the polarity to be expected in the bond and, thus, the bond type. When the difference is very small or zero, the bond is covalent and nonpolar. When it is large, the bond is polar covalent or ionic. The absolute values of the electronegativity differences between the atoms in the bonds H–H, H–Cl, and Na–Cl are 0 (nonpolar), 0.9 (polar covalent), and 2.1 (ionic),...
