Laboratory Environment

A laboratory environment is the controlled physical, procedural, and organizational setting in which scientific work is performed safely and reproducibly. In chemistry, it regulates factors such as temperature, ventilation, cleanliness, chemical storage, and access to equipment so researchers can control reaction conditions while limiting contamination, exposure, and accidental interactions. Fume hoods remove hazardous vapors, while personal protective equipment, labeling, waste segregation, and standard operating procedures manage risks during handling and analysis. Well-designed laboratory environments support accurate measurements, reliable experiments, regulatory compliance, and effective training across research, education, industrial development, and quality-control applications.

We demonstrate a method to collect magnetotactic bacteria (MTB) that can be applied to natural waters. MTB can be isolated and enriched from sediment samples using a relatively simple setup that takes advantage of the bacteria's natural magnetism. Isolated MTB can then be examined in detail using both light and electron microscopy.

Decontamination for Laboratory Biosafety

2023

Robert M. Rioux and Zhifeng Chen, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA Decontamination is essential for laboratory biosafety, as the accumulation of microbial contamination in the laboratory can lead to the transmission of disease. The degree of decontamination can be classified as either disinfection or sterilization. Disinfection aims to eliminate all pathogenic microorganisms, with the exception of bacterial spores on lab surfaces or equipment. Sterilization, on the other hand,...
