Material Safety Data Sheet

A Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), now commonly called a Safety Data Sheet (SDS), is a standardized document that communicates the hazards, safe handling requirements, and emergency information for a chemical product. It organizes information on chemical properties, hazard classification, exposure controls, personal protective equipment, storage, first aid, spill response, and disposal so users can assess risks before working with a substance. In chemistry laboratories and industrial settings, these sheets support informed chemical selection, risk assessment, labeling, and regulatory compliance, helping students, researchers, and safety professionals prevent exposure, respond effectively to incidents, and manage chemicals throughout their use.

Robert M. Rioux & Suprita Jharimune, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA Among the many hazards present in the laboratory, electrical hazards are one of the most common we must be cognizant of since most of the laboratory equipment we use requires electricity for operation. Improper handling or operation of electrical devices might lead to electric shock with the potential risk of injury or even death. Electric sparks can lead to fire or explosion (since many flammable...

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA In contrast to the production of cars or toasters, where millions of identical copies are made and extensive prototype testing is possible, each civil engineering structure is unique and very expensive to reproduce (Fig.1). Therefore, civil engineers must extensively rely on analytical modeling to design their structures. These models are simplified abstractions of reality and are used to...

A balance sheet is a key component of financial statement analysis. It provides a snapshot of a company's financial position at a given time by listing its assets, liabilities, and shareholders' equity. It includes both current and long-lived assets and current and long-term liabilities. Assets reflect what the company owns, such as cash, inventory, and real estate, whereas liabilities represent what the company owes, including debts like loans and accounts payable. Balance sheet analysis is...

Source: Ali Bazzi, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT. Electric machines and power electronics experiments involve electrical currents, voltages, power, and energy quantities that should be handled with extreme diligence and care. These may include three-phase AC voltage (208 V, 230 V, or 480 V), up to 250 V DC voltages, and currents that can reach 10 A. Electrocution occurs when an electrical path is established through the body with very low currents...
