Nickel Complexes

Nickel complexes are coordination compounds in which a nickel ion binds surrounding ligands, making them important for understanding metal–ligand bonding, reactivity, and electronic structure in chemistry. They form through coordinate covalent bonds donated by atoms such as nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur, or phosphorus; the ligand arrangement and nickel oxidation state determine molecular geometry, magnetic behavior, color, and susceptibility to ligand exchange or redox reactions. Because their properties can be tuned by changing the metal environment, nickel complexes serve as catalysts for bond-forming and hydrogenation reactions, models for metalloenzyme active sites, and components in molecular materials and electrochemical systems, linking fundamental coordination chemistry to synthesis, energy research, and industrial processes.

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Neal Abrams — SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry Transition metals are found everywhere from vitamin supplements to electroplating baths. Transition metals also make up the pigments in many paints and compose all minerals. Typically, transition metals are found in the cationic form since they readily oxidize, or lose electrons, and are surrounded by electron donors called ligands. These ligands do not form ionic or covalent bonds with the metal center,...

Synthesis of Platinum-nickel Nanowires and Optimization for Oxygen Reduction Performance

2018

The protocol describes the synthesis and electrochemical testing of platinum-nickel nanowires. Nanowires were synthesized by the galvanic displacement of a nickel nanowire template. Post-synthesis processing, including hydrogen annealing, acid leaching, and oxygen annealing were used to optimize nanowire performance and durability in the oxygen reduction reaction.
