Palladium Platinum Nickel

Palladium, platinum, and nickel are group 10 transition metals whose related electronic structures give them important chemical and industrial roles. Their partially filled d orbitals enable variable oxidation states, metal–ligand bonding, and catalytic interactions that facilitate bond formation, hydrogenation, and other redox processes. Palladium and platinum support selective catalysis in organic synthesis, fuel cells, and emission-control systems, while nickel provides a more abundant option for catalysts, alloys, batteries, and electrochemical technologies. Comparing these metals helps chemists connect periodic trends with catalytic activity, reactivity, durability, and the design of materials for energy conversion and sustainable chemical manufacturing.

Synthesis of Platinum-nickel Nanowires and Optimization for Oxygen Reduction Performance

2018

The protocol describes the synthesis and electrochemical testing of platinum-nickel nanowires. Nanowires were synthesized by the galvanic displacement of a nickel nanowire template. Post-synthesis processing, including hydrogen annealing, acid leaching, and oxygen annealing were used to optimize nanowire performance and durability in the oxygen reduction reaction.

2023

Source: Vy M. Dong and Faben Cruz, Department of Chemistry, University of California, Irvine, CA This experiment will demonstrate the concept of a palladium-catalyzed cross coupling. The set-up of a typical Pd-catalyzed cross coupling reaction will be illustrated. Pd-catalyzed cross coupling reactions have had a profound effect on how synthetic chemists create molecules. These reactions have enabled chemists to construct bonds in new and more efficient ways. Such reactions have found widespread...
