Pi Electron Effects

Pi electron effects are the ways that electrons in p orbitals influence molecular structure, stability, reactivity, and spectroscopic behavior in chemistry. Through conjugation, p orbitals overlap across adjacent atoms, allowing electron delocalization; resonance and aromaticity can then distribute charge, lower energy, and alter bond lengths, while substituents modify electron density through donation or withdrawal. These effects help explain why conjugated and aromatic compounds undergo characteristic reactions, show distinctive ultraviolet-visible spectra, and exhibit predictable acidity, basicity, and regioselectivity. Understanding pi electron effects supports the interpretation of mechanisms and the design of pharmaceuticals, dyes, polymers, and other functional molecules.

The Buckingham Pi Theorem

2025

The Buckingham Pi theorem provides a structured method to simplify fluid dynamics problems by reducing complex systems of variables to dimensionless terms. In analyzing flow through a pipe, variables that define the system include the pipe's diameter, the fluid's velocity, its density, and viscosity. These can be combined into a single dimensionless term, the Reynolds number (Re), which captures their essential relationship. The first step in applying the Buckingham Pi theorem is identifying...

Determination of Pi Terms

The Buckingham Pi theorem is a valuable method in dimensional analysis, reducing complex relationships between variables into dimensionless terms. Relevant variables in analyzing the lift force on an airplane wing include lift force, air density, wing area, aircraft velocity, and air viscosity. Expressing each variable in terms of fundamental dimensions — mass, length, and time — provides a consistent foundation for constructing these dimensionless terms. The theorem indicates that the number...

PI Controller: Design

2024

Proportional Integral (PI) controllers are a fundamental component in modern control systems, widely used to enhance performance and mitigate steady-state errors. They are particularly effective in applications such as automatic brightness adjustment on smartphones, where they excel at mitigating steady-state errors for step-function inputs. Unlike PD controllers, which require time-varying errors to function optimally, PI controllers leverage their integral component to address residual...

π Electron Effects on Chemical Shift: Overview

2024

An applied magnetic field causes loosely bound π-electrons in organic molecules to circulate, producing a local or induced diamagnetic field over a large spatial volume. As the molecules tumble in solution, the field generated by π-electrons in spherical substituents results in a zero net field. However, the net field generated by π-electrons in non-spherical substituents is not zero. The effect of this induced field depends on the orientation of the molecule with respect to B0, resulting in...

2017

This protocol describes a method for exposing rodents to electronic cigarette vapor (E-vapor) and cigarette smoke. Exposure chambers are constructed by modifying anesthesia chambers with an automated pumping system that delivers E-vapor or cigarette smoke to rodents. This system can easily be modified to accommodate many experimental endpoints.
