Pollutant Capture

Pollutant capture is the removal or containment of harmful chemical substances from air, water, or other environmental media to reduce their exposure and ecological impact. In chemistry, capture relies on processes such as adsorption onto porous solids, absorption into liquids, filtration, or selective reactions that transform pollutants into less mobile or less toxic forms; performance depends on factors including concentration, solubility, surface chemistry, and contact time. These principles support technologies for treating industrial emissions, contaminated water, and hazardous waste, while helping researchers design more selective sorbents, catalysts, and separation systems for environmental protection and resource recovery.

Source: Villela, H. D. M., et al. Prospecting Microbial Strains for Bioremediation and Probiotics Development for Metaorganism Research and Preservation. J. Vis. Exp. (2019).This video demonstrates the isolation of pollutant-degrading marine bacteria through serial dilution, colony selection, and growth in EE2-containing medium. By using EE2 as the sole carbon source, the protocol identifies bacterial strains capable of metabolizing this environmental pollutant.

The Efficient Level of Pollution

2025

The production of goods is essential for economic growth and societal development, but it often results in pollution as an unintended consequence. Completely eliminating pollution, while seemingly ideal, is impractical. This would mean stopping all production of vital goods and services. The real challenge is properly balancing the benefits of goods production against the resulting environmental damage. The Concept of Efficient Pollution The marginal social cost of pollution is the sum of...
