Complication Recognition

Complication recognition is the systematic identification of unexpected problems that arise during or after a clinical condition, procedure, or treatment, making it essential for timely patient care. Clinicians recognize complications by comparing a patient’s symptoms, physical findings, vital signs, laboratory results, and imaging with the expected clinical course, then evaluating patterns that suggest deterioration or treatment-related harm. This process supports early escalation, targeted diagnostic testing, and appropriate intervention across inpatient, outpatient, and procedural settings. Reliable recognition can reduce delays in management, improve communication among healthcare teams, and strengthen clinical decision-making and patient safety.
