Hepatic Blood Flow

Hepatic blood flow is the delivery and drainage of blood through the liver, a circulation that supports metabolism, detoxification, nutrient processing, and regulation of systemic physiology. The liver receives blood from two sources: the portal vein carries nutrient-rich venous blood from the gastrointestinal tract, while the hepatic artery supplies oxygenated blood; these streams mix in hepatic sinusoids before leaving through the central veins and hepatic veins. Understanding this dual blood supply helps clinicians interpret liver function, drug clearance, portal hypertension, ischemic injury, and changes in perfusion caused by disease or surgery, making hepatic blood flow important in diagnosis and treatment planning.

An optical system was developed to visualize hepatic microcirculation with FITC-labeled erythrocytes and to measure the partial pressure of oxygen in the microvessels with laser-assisted phosphorimetry. This method can be used to investigate physiological and pathological mechanisms by analyzing microvascular structure, diameter, blood flow velocity, and oxygen tension.

Effect of Hepatic Disease on Pharmacokinetics: Drug Dosing and Hepatic Blood Flow

2025

Chronic liver disease significantly impacts drug metabolism due to alterations in hepatic blood flow and enzyme accessibility. This disruption affects the body's pharmacokinetics—the movement and processing of drugs within the system. Key enzymes crucial for metabolizing medications become less accessible, changing how drugs are processed and utilized. Furthermore, liver disease influences the synthesis of plasma proteins, such as albumin and globulins, which play critical roles in drug binding...

2026

This experimental protocol describes a hepatic lymph duct-cannulated rat model that enables direct and quantitative assessment of hepatic lymphatic and vascular drainage. The model allows simultaneous sampling of hepatic lymph and systemic blood to investigate hepatic transport, metabolism, and immune signaling, supporting studies of drug pharmacokinetics and liver-specific biology.

Heterotopic Auxiliary Rat Liver Transplantation With Flow-regulated Portal Vein Arterialization in Acute Hepatic Failure

Auxiliary liver transplantation provides a temporary support in acute hepatic failure, until regeneration of the failing liver. The heterotopic auxiliary liver transplantation (HALT) with portal vein arterialization (PVA) renders sufficient liver function. We developed an analogous technique in the rat, to examine the influence of the portal vein arterialization on the morphology and function of the graft.
