Proximal Tibia

The proximal tibia is the upper portion of the shinbone, forming the lower part of the knee joint and serving as a major pathway for weight transfer from the femur to the leg. Its medial and lateral condyles articulate with the femoral condyles, while the tibial plateau and intercondylar region support knee stability and movement. In clinical practice, assessment of this region helps identify tibial plateau fractures, growth-plate injuries, degenerative changes, and ligament-related damage through physical examination and imaging. Understanding its anatomy guides diagnosis, treatment planning, fracture fixation, and rehabilitation for conditions that affect mobility and knee function.

Bones of the Lower Limb: Tibia and Fibula

2025

The tibia is the main weight-bearing bone of the lower leg. It is larger than the fibula with which it is paired. The tibia is also the second longest bone in the body and is located right below the skin. The proximal end of the tibia forms the medial and the lateral condyle, which articulates with the condyles of the femur to form the knee joint. Between the articulating surfaces is the irregular elevated area known as the intercondylar eminence that serves as the inferior attachment point for...
