Asphalt Durability

Asphalt durability is the ability of asphalt mixtures and pavements to maintain structural performance and surface quality under traffic, weather, and environmental exposure over time. It depends on interactions among the asphalt binder, mineral aggregates, air voids, moisture, and temperature; oxidation can stiffen the binder and promote cracking, while repeated loading and heat can cause rutting or permanent deformation. Engineers assess durability through laboratory testing, field monitoring, and mixture design that balance stiffness, flexibility, and resistance to water damage. Improving asphalt durability extends pavement service life, reduces maintenance needs, and supports more reliable, cost-effective transportation infrastructure.

2023

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA Concrete and asphalt are by far the most common construction materials used today. Concrete is a composite material consisting of cement, water, air, coarse aggregate, and fine aggregates. Fine aggregates are typically sands and coarse aggregates are natural or crushed rocks. Chemical admixtures to modify certain specific properties are also commonly used (i.e., superplasticizers to make the...

Brick Durability, Strength, and Appearance

2024

Brick durability, strength, and appearance are crucial factors in construction, influencing the choice of bricks for specific applications. The process of freeze-thaw, for instance, significantly affects brick durability. This phenomenon occurs when water absorbed by a brick expands as it freezes, potentially causing damage when it melts and refreezes. Bricks are graded for durability: SW-grade bricks are the most durable, offering high strength and low water absorption, followed by MW-grade...

A Testing Platform for Durability Studies of Polymers and Fiber-reinforced Polymer Composites under Concurrent Hygrothermo-mechanical Stimuli

2014

The durability of polymers and fiber-reinforced polymer composites in service is a critical aspect for their designs and condition-based maintenance. We present a novel low-cost laboratory testing platform for the investigation of the influence of concurrent mechanical and environmental loadings, and may help design more efficient yet safer composite structures.

2016

In this study, a protocol was developed to produce good quality pellets using a flat die pellet mill at reduced specific energy consumption testing high-moisture corn stover and a starch based binder. The results indicated that adding a corn starch binder improved the pellet durability, reduced percent fines and decreased specific energy consumption.
