Bone Motion Measurement

Bone motion measurement is the quantitative assessment of how bones translate and rotate during movement, providing essential data for understanding musculoskeletal mechanics and designing reliable biomedical systems. Engineers track anatomical landmarks or implanted markers using motion capture, imaging, or sensor-based systems, then transform their positions into a defined coordinate system to calculate displacement, joint angles, and movement patterns over time. These measurements support biomechanical analysis, evaluation of joint implants and fixation devices, rehabilitation planning, and investigation of injury-related changes. By linking measured motion with applied loads and tissue behavior, the field helps improve diagnosis, device performance, and evidence-based treatment design.

Source: Ketron Mitchell-Wynne, PhD, Asantha Cooray, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, School of Physical Sciences, University of California, Irvine, CA This experiment demonstrates the kinematics of motion in 1 and 2 dimensions. This lab will begin by studying motion in 1 dimension, under constant acceleration, by launching a projectile directly upward and measuring the maximum height reached. This lab will verify that the maximum height reached is consistent with the kinematic...

Subject-specific Musculoskeletal Model for Studying Bone Strain During Dynamic Motion

During landing, lower-body bones experience large mechanical loads and are deformed. It is essential to measure bone deformation to better understand the mechanisms of bone stress injuries associated with impacts. A novel approach integrating subject-specific musculoskeletal modeling and finite element analysis is used to measure tibial strain during dynamic movements.

Source: Andrew Duffy, PhD, Department of Physics, Boston University, Boston, MA This experiment examines at various situations involving two interacting objects. First, the experiment examines the forces that two objects apply to one another while they collide. The objects are wheeled carts that have variable masses. The purpose of this experiment is to discover when the force the first cart exerts on the other is the same magnitude as the force the second cart exerts back on the first, as well...
