Cylindrical Tank

A cylindrical tank is a vessel with a circular cross-section used to contain, store, or process liquids, gases, and bulk materials in engineering systems. Its geometry distributes internal pressure around the curved wall, while hydrostatic pressure increases with fluid depth and produces circumferential and longitudinal stresses that guide wall-thickness and material selection. Engineers use cylindrical tanks in water treatment, chemical processing, fuel storage, and industrial manufacturing, designing them to withstand pressure, corrosion, temperature changes, and support loads. Analysis of tank shape, contents, and operating conditions helps improve structural safety, capacity, durability, and cost-effectiveness.

Polar and Cylindrical Coordinates

The Cartesian coordinate system is a very convenient tool to use when describing the displacements and velocities of objects and the forces acting on them. However, it becomes cumbersome when we need to describe the rotation of objects. So, when describing rotation, the polar coordinate system is generally used. In the polar coordinate system, as shown in the above figure, the location of a point in a plane is given by two polar coordinates. The first polar coordinate is the radial coordinate,...

Spherical and Cylindrical Capacitor

A spherical capacitor consists of two concentric conducting spherical shells of radii R1 (inner shell) and R2 (outer shell). The shells have equal and opposite charges of +Q and −Q, respectively. For an isolated conducting spherical capacitor, the radius of the outer shell can be considered to be infinite. Conventionally, considering the symmetry, the electric field between the concentric shells of a spherical capacitor is directed radially outward. The magnitude of the field, calculated by...

The article describes a behavioral method to assess stress in zebrafish. In response to stress, zebrafish tends to swim at bottom of a tank until stress is removed. The sample protocol describes stepwise method for performing the assay.

Inductance: Solid Cylindrical Conductor

To calculate the inductance of a solid cylindrical conductor, consider a 1-meter section of a non-magnetic, current-carrying conductor with radius r. Disregarding end effects and assuming uniform current density, Ampere's law helps determine the magnetic field inside the conductor. This law states that the magnetic field intensity H is concentric and constant within the conductor. Given the uniform current distribution, the magnetic field Hx and flux density Bx inside the conductor are...

Triple Integrals in Cylindrical Coordinates

Cylindrical coordinates describe a point in three-dimensional space using three values: radial distance, angle, and height. The height gives the position above the xy-plane, the radial distance measures how far the point is from the z-axis, and the angle describes the point’s direction from the positive x-axis in the xy-plane. This system is especially useful for regions with circular symmetry because it matches the natural geometry of cylinders, disks, and circular tanks. To calculate volume,...
