Flat Film Region

A flat film region is a portion of a thin liquid film in which the surface remains nearly level and the film thickness changes very little along the flow direction. It develops when viscous forces redistribute the liquid and the flow reaches a stable, fully developed condition, often under the combined effects of gravity, surface tension, and wall shear. Engineers analyze flat film regions to predict fluid transport, coating uniformity, lubrication performance, and heat or mass transfer. Understanding this region also helps identify entrance effects, surface disturbances, and transitions to unstable film behavior in engineered systems.

Source: Logan G. Kiefer, Andrew R. Falkowski, and Taylor D. Sparks, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT Electroplating is a process that uses electric current to reduce dissolved metal cations so that they form a thin coating on an electrode. Other thin film deposition techniques include chemical vapor deposition (CVD), spin coating, dip coating, and sputter deposition among others. CVD uses a gas-phase precursor of the element to be...

We describe a method for the fabrication of large-area (up to 13 cm diameter) and ultrathin (as thin as 8 nm) polymer films. Instead of using a sacrificial interlayer to delaminate the film from its substrate, we use a self-limiting surface treatment suitable for arbitrarily large areas.

Flat Belts: Problem Solving

2023

Flat belts are crucial in many industrial applications as they help transmit power from one pulley to another. The concept of forces and moments is used to determine the maximum moment on a pulley. For instance, consider a flat belt that wraps around two pulleys, A and B, with radii of 30 cm and 10 cm, respectively. The angle between the belt and the horizontal is 20 degrees at the pulleys. As pulley B rotates clockwise and drives pulley A, tension T2 is caused at one end of the belt, while...
