Magnetic Flux

Magnetic flux is the measure of the magnetic field passing through a defined surface, and it helps quantify how magnetic fields interact with electrical systems. It is calculated as the surface integral of magnetic flux density over area; for a uniform field, Φ = BA cos θ, so field strength, surface area, and the angle between the field and the surface normal determine the result, measured in webers. In engineering, changes in magnetic flux generate induced electromotive force according to Faraday’s law, enabling transformers, electric generators, inductors, and many sensors. Flux analysis also supports magnetic-circuit design, reduces losses and saturation, and improves device efficiency and reliability.

The magnetic flux measures the number of magnetic field lines passing through a given surface area. The SI unit for magnetic flux is the weber (Wb). Magnetic flux is a scalar quantity. It depends on three factors: the strength of the magnetic field B, the area through which the field lines pass, and the relative orientation of the field with the surface area. Suppose a surface is divided into elements of area dA. For each element, the component of the magnetic field that is normal to the...

Source: Ali Bazzi, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT. The objective of this experiment is to achieve hands-on experience with different magnetic components from design and material perspectives. This experiment covers B-H curves of magnetic material and inductor design through identifying unknown design factors. The B-H curve of a magnetic element, such as an inductor or transformer, is a characteristic of the magnetic material forming the core around...

Measurements of CO2 Fluxes at Non-Ideal Eddy Covariance Sites

2019

The presented protocol uses the eddy covariance method at non-typical locations, applicable to all types of short-canopy ecosystems with limited area, on a currently reforested windthrow site in Poland. Details of measuring site setup rules, flux calculations and quality control, and final result analysis, are described.

The concept of flux describes how much of something goes through a given area. More formally, it is the dot product of a vector field within an area. For a better understanding, consider an open rectangular surface with a small area that is placed in a uniform electric field. The larger the area, the more field lines go through it and, hence, the greater the flux; similarly, the stronger the electric field (represented by a greater density of lines), the greater the flux. On the other hand, if...

Measurement of Extracellular Ion Fluxes Using the Ion-selective Self-referencing Microelectrode Technique

Transporters in cell membranes allow differential segregation of ions across cell membranes or cell layers and play crucial roles during tissue physiology, repair and pathology. We describe the ion-selective self-referencing microelectrode that allows the measurement of specific ion fluxes at single cells and tissues in vivo.
