Sampling Rate Conversion

Sampling rate conversion is the process of changing the number of samples used to represent a continuous or discrete-time signal while preserving its essential information. To increase the rate, a system interpolates between existing samples; to reduce it, the signal is typically low-pass filtered to remove frequencies that could cause aliasing before decimation. Conversion may use rational factors, combining interpolation and decimation in digital filters designed for computational efficiency. In engineering, sampling rate conversion enables digital audio and video interfaces, software-defined radio, sensor systems, and communications equipment to exchange data across components operating at different clock rates while controlling distortion and bandwidth.

Other than maintaining genome stability via DNA repair, homologous recombination plays an important role in diversifying the genome. In fact, the recombination of sequences forms the molecular basis of genomic evolution. Random and non-random permutations of genomic sequences create a library of new amalgamated sequences. These newly formed genomes can determine the fitness and survival of cells. In bacteria, homologous and non-homologous types of recombination lead to the evolution of new...

This video demonstrates the procedure of bisulfite modification of genomic DNA from gastrointestinal cancer samples. The technique is beneficial for investigating the relationship between genes’ methylation patterns and establishing their contribution to carcinogenesis.

Conversion of Units

Sometimes, there is a need to convert from one unit to another one. For instance, reading a cookbook in which quantities are expressed in units of liters or ounces may require conversion of quantities to cups. Or, when looking up directions on how to get to a location, we may be interested to know how many miles we are going to walk. In this case, we would have to convert units of feet or meters to miles. The first step in the unit conversion is to list the given units and the units required...

Mass Conservation and Flow Rate Measurements

Source: Ricardo Mejia-Alvarez and Hussam Hikmat Jabbar, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI The purpose of this experiment is to demonstrate the calibration of a flow passage as a flowmeter using a control volume (CV) formulation [1, 2]. The CV analysis focuses on the macroscopic effect of flow on engineering systems, rather than the detailed description that could be achieved with a detailed differential analysis. These two techniques should be...
