Urban Street Traffic

Urban street traffic is the movement of people and goods through city road networks, where limited space and competing travel modes make efficient, safe operation a central engineering concern. Traffic flow emerges from interactions among vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, transit services, intersections, and traffic signals, with demand, road capacity, speed, and signal timing shaping congestion and delay. Engineers analyze these conditions using traffic counts, flow models, and performance measures to design streets, coordinate signals, manage access, and improve intersection operations. Effective traffic planning can increase mobility, reduce crashes and travel delays, support public transportation, and limit fuel consumption and emissions while adapting streets to changing urban needs.

2023

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University Urban forests broadly include urban parks, street trees, landscaped boulevards, public gardens, river and coastal promenades, greenways, river corridors, wetlands, nature preserves, natural areas, shelterbelts of trees, and working trees at industrial brownfield sites. The history of urban trees begins with trees as landscape embellishment. Today, urban trees are seen as essential components of city infrastructure...

This paper describes the design, construction, and function of a 1,000 m2 facility containing 24 individual 33.6 m2 field plots equipped for measuring total runoff volumes with time and collection of runoff subsamples at selected intervals for quantification of chemical constituents in the runoff water from simulated home lawns.

Introduction to Membrane Traffic

2023

The ER, Golgi apparatus, endosomes, and lysosomes work in tandem to modify, sort, and package proteins and lipids. An integrated membrane trafficking network facilitates the back and forth shuttling of molecules within different organelles in the same cell or across the cell membrane. The transport of soluble and membrane proteins is mediated by transport vesicles that collect cargo from one cellular compartment and deliver it to another by fusing with the target organelle membrane. The Rab...
