Venturi Meter

A Venturi meter is a flow-measurement device that determines the velocity and volume flow rate of a fluid moving through a pipe, making it important in fluid mechanics and engineering systems. It uses a shaped passage with a converging inlet, narrow throat, and diverging outlet; as fluid accelerates through the throat, pressure decreases, and measurements of the pressure difference between the inlet and throat, together with the pipe geometry, allow flow rate calculation through Bernoulli’s principle and continuity. Venturi meters provide reliable measurements with relatively low permanent pressure loss and are used in water distribution, chemical processing, HVAC systems, and industrial process control.

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Zhongqi He - United States Department of Agriculture Acids and bases are substances capable of donating protons (H+) and hydroxide ions (OH-), respectively. They are two extremes that describe chemicals. Mixing acids and bases can cancel out or neutralize their extreme effects. A substance that is neither acidic nor basic is neutral. The values of proton concentration ([H+]) for most solutions are inconveniently small and difficult to compare so that a more practical...

2025

Oxygen therapy is a pivotal aspect of medical care, particularly for patients with respiratory ailments. Two prominent oxygen-delivering systems include the Venturi mask and the transtracheal oxygen catheter. Venturi Mask The Venturi mask, named after the Venturi effect, is designed to deliver precise oxygen concentrations. It consists of a large tube with an oxygen inlet that narrows down, causing a pressure drop that pulls air in through adjustable side ports. The mask is a lightweight,...

Source: Ricardo Mejia-Alvarez and Hussam Hikmat Jabbar, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI The purpose of this experiment is to demonstrate the calibration of a flow passage as a flowmeter using a control volume (CV) formulation [1, 2]. The CV analysis focuses on the macroscopic effect of flow on engineering systems, rather than the detailed description that could be achieved with a detailed differential analysis. These two techniques should be...
