Wind Tunnel

A wind tunnel is an engineering facility that generates controlled airflow around a stationary model to study how air moves and how aerodynamic forces act on objects. Fans or compressors drive air through a test section, where researchers measure effects such as lift, drag, pressure distribution, turbulence, and flow separation under defined speed and environmental conditions. Wind tunnel testing supports the design and evaluation of aircraft, automobiles, buildings, bridges, wind turbines, and other structures exposed to moving air. By providing repeatable measurements before full-scale construction or flight testing, it helps improve performance, stability, safety, and energy efficiency.

Source: Jose Roberto Moreto and Xiaofeng Liu, Department of Aerospace Engineering, San Diego State University, San Diego, CA Wind tunnel tests are useful in the design of vehicles and structures that are subjected to airflow during their use. Wind tunnel data are generated by applying a controlled air flow to a model of the object being studied. The test model usually has a similar geometry but is a smaller scale compared to the full-sized object. To ensure accurate and useful data is collected...

Here, we describe the construction and use of a wind tunnel for odor mediated behavioural assays with insects. The wind tunnel design facilitates the release of odor sources by several methods, with and without visual stimuli. Wind tunnel experiments are important methods to identify behaviorally active volatile chemicals.

Three-Winding Transformers

Three identical single-phase transformers can be configured to form a three-phase transformer connection, which involves high-voltage and low-voltage windings. The high-voltage windings are denoted by capital letters A-B-C, while the low-voltage windings are labeled with lowercase letters a-b-c, representing their respective phases. This notation helps distinguish between the high and low voltage sides of the transformer. In the per-unit equivalent circuit of a grounded Y-Y three-phase...

Wind Turbine Machine Models

2024

In the growing field of wind energy, incorporating wind turbine models into transient stability analysis is essential. Induction and synchronous machines are the primary models used, with induction machines being prevalent due to their simplicity and reliability. Induction machines interact through the rotating magnetic field generated by the stator and the rotor. The key parameter is slip, which is the difference between synchronous speed and rotor speed relative to synchronous speed. Slip is...
